3. Shutter Island
There almost should be an anxiety warning in this film. If you aren’t familiar with Shutter Island, you’ll know that it means a lot for Martin Scorsese to have two entries on this list, and this being the far more thought-provoking film of the two. Leonardo DiCaprio turns in some of his best work as a Federal Marshal investigating a missing patient, as he’s shut in by a storm with his partner Mark Ruffalo. From there on out, the imagery and storytelling of this film are fantastic from start to finish.
2. Interstellar
A masterpiece in science fiction, you’ll be on the edge of your seat for one of Christopher Nolan’s most incredible pieces of the modern era. Matthew McConaughey does a spectacular job conveying the impending dread and urgency of this film, while also turning in some quotes worthy of going up on your studying whiteboard. Oh, and Hans Zimmer is magical. As always.
1. Inception
Your brain just might fall out watching this one. The top of our list wasn’t reserved for Scorsese and Nolan. It just so happened that they made us think the most. Take a wander through the reality of dreams with DiCaprio and Elliot Page in this twisty, very tough-to-follow film that’s well worth taking notes on. While you watch, you may want to bring along a top to spin periodically.
