Every parent's nightmare comes true in this wildly entertaining spectacular crime thriller. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal have a captivating presence in this immersive film, and you will probably need 10-15 minutes just to debrief when the final credits roll. Be on the lookout for any red whistles.

5. The Departed

Not only does The Departed have an A-list cast, it has an A-list plot as well. Martin Scorsese has a masterclass on storytelling for a reason. This crime thriller has so many twists and turns, that you won’t know what to expect from one minute to the next. Get on the gritty streets of Boston that you’ll need laser focus to keep up with. Also, it’s a good reminder to stay up to date with pest control.

4. The Prestige

Want to see what the cast of The Dark Night was doing before the film? Magic! Christopher Nolan’s less commercially successful but thought-provoking, twisty turn-of-the-century film about London’s magic performance scene is a devastating story of fantastical revenge. Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Hugh Jackman star in this thriller that will make what you thought you knew about the world disappear. Stay wary of fields of thousands of top hats, as well. 

3. Shutter Island

There almost should be an anxiety warning in this film. If you aren’t familiar with Shutter Island, you’ll know that it means a lot for Martin Scorsese to have two entries on this list, and this being the far more thought-provoking film of the two. Leonardo DiCaprio turns in some of his best work as a Federal Marshal investigating a missing patient, as he’s shut in by a storm with his partner Mark Ruffalo. From there on out, the imagery and storytelling of this film are fantastic from start to finish. 

2. Interstellar

A masterpiece in science fiction, you’ll be on the edge of your seat for one of Christopher Nolan’s most incredible pieces of the modern era. Matthew McConaughey does a spectacular job conveying the impending dread and urgency of this film, while also turning in some quotes worthy of going up on your studying whiteboard. Oh, and Hans Zimmer is magical. As always.

1. Inception

Your brain just might fall out watching this one. The top of our list wasn’t reserved for Scorsese and Nolan. It just so happened that they made us think the most. Take a wander through the reality of dreams with DiCaprio and Elliot Page in this twisty, very tough-to-follow film that’s well worth taking notes on. While you watch, you may want to bring along a top to spin periodically.
